Western acupuncture, also known as dry needling, is an evidence-based therapeutic technique used within physiotherapy practice. Unlike traditional Chinese acupuncture, it is based on neuroanatomy and modern scientific understanding of how the nervous and musculoskeletal systems interact.
Fine needles are inserted into specific points — often myofascial trigger points (tight knots within muscles) — to stimulate a healing response, reduce muscle tension, improve blood flow and alleviate pain. It is often used alongside manual therapy and exercise rehabilitation for optimal results.
